Yabby – 4G/Wifi or 4G/GPS

TINY BATTERY-POWERED ASSET LOCATION USING WIFI SNIFFING OR GPS

4G/WiFi Version ETA August 2018

About the Yabby 4G/WiFi

We have been asked numerous times for a device that can be used to locate items indoors - where even the best GPS will not work - such as in a warehouse or basement. This version of the Yabby uses a WiFi 'sniffer' to scan for WiFi access points and the signal strength from each one. This information is then used to triangulate a position which is typically accurate to 100 feet / 30m in metropolitan areas. And this can all be done in typically less than 3 seconds, using a lot less power than a typical GPS fix.

This WiFi sniffing combined with the new low power capabilities of the LTE-CATM1 module allows us to shrink the design size down even smaller and use smaller AAA batteries.

The Yabby's tiny form factor and indoor location capability opens up a variety of tracking applications such as:

  • pallet tracking / location
  • beer keg tracking / location
  • bikes
  • animals
  • parcels
  • and many other ideas....

Yabby 4G/GPSFor asset tracking applications where WiFi may not always be available, the GPS version of the Yabby provides all the features of the Remora and Oyster in a tiny form factor.

    Yabby
Low-profile IP67 rugged housing The housing screws together for easy assembly, and has 2 convenient mounting tabs. It is low-profile and light making it suitable for mounting on a collar, or placing in packages.
    Dimensions: 85 mm x 63 mm x 24 mm (including mounting tabs)
    Weight: 160 grams with batteries
Batteries AAA size: The Yabby uses 3 x “AAA” size 1.5V alkaline or lithium batteries
Off-the-shelf 1.5V Lithium: The Yabby should be fitted with off-the-shelf 1.5V Lithium batteries for operation in cold temperature conditions, or to offer the maximum battery life. These are readily available from retail outlets, for example Energizer Ultimate Lithium.
Battery Life with Adaptive-Tracking The Yabby can be set to use Adaptive-Tracking technology where the accelerometer and GPS or WiFi data are used to intelligently work out if it is moving and to send frequent updates, and to scale the update rate down to once per day if the asset is stationary - to preserve battery life.
3 years @ one position per day (at 25°C).
    Operating Temperature -20°C to +60°C
For operation in extreme temperatures, the Yabby must be fitted with Lithium batteries. Batteries are affected by temperature extremes and typical performance is dependent on temperature.
    (4G/GPS Version) High sensitivity GPS
    • Supports concurrent GPS and GLONASS and other GNSS systems
    • 72 channel high sensitivity receiver
    • -167dBm industry leading tracking performance
    • Optimal hot-start performance.
(4G/GPS Version) GLONASS The Yabby uses both the GPS and GLONASS positioning systems simultaneously. This allows the device to use twice the number of satellites to get a position fix – making it faster and more accurate.
(4G/GPS Version) Low Noise GPS Amplifier (LNA) GPS signals are boosted by a special low-noise amplifier (LNA). This allows the Yabby to operate where normal units will fail to receive GPS signal – like in a container stack!
Internal Antenna Internal GPS and Cellular antennas tuned by the RF laboratories to ensure optimal performance.
3 Axis Accelerometer The 3-axis accelerometer allows the Yabby to ‘sleep’ in an ultra-low power state yet still wakeup when movement occurs.
